You can join The Japan Book Edit at any time. Each edition stays open for new subscribers until the last day of its second month. If you subscribe before then, your first box will be the current edition. If you join after that date, your first box will be the next edition.
Around one week before your next billing date, you'll receive a reminder email letting you know your subscription is about to renew. This gives you time to skip, manage, or cancel your subscription before you're charged.
Subscriptions renew automatically on the 1st of every second month. Your first box is charged immediately at the time of purchase. All renewals are charged at NZ$65 per box (+NZ$10 shipping).

How much does it cost?
Your first box is NZ$50 — a special launch price. From your second box onwards, each box is NZ$65, charged automatically every two months. A shipping fee of NZ$10 applies to all orders.
When will my first box arrive?
Your first box ships within a week of your order. From your second box onwards, each new edition ships within a week of its release date — for example, the Sep & Oct Box goes on sale September 1st, so it ships within the first week of September.
What's inside the box?
Each box contains one carefully selected Japanese novel in English translation, a handcrafted booklet filled with Japanese words, stories, and inspiration, and a high-quality item from a Japanese brand, personally chosen to connect with that edition's story. Every box is a little piece of Japan, curated with care.
Do you announce the book in advance? What if I've already read it?
Yes — we announce the book for the next edition around the 15th of the previous month. For example, the July & August book will be announced around June 15th. If you've already read the upcoming book, you can skip that edition. You'll receive a reminder email around one week before your billing date, giving you time to skip before you're charged.
When am I billed?
Your first box is charged immediately when you subscribe. From your second box onward, you're billed on the 1st, at the start of each two-month cycle — see the Billing Date table above for the exact dates.
Can I skip or cancel anytime?
Yes — you can skip a box or cancel your subscription anytime after your first order, with no lock-in contracts and no cancellation fees. The only thing to keep in mind is timing: once a box has been billed, we're not able to cancel or refund it, so be sure to make changes before your next billing date. Your reminder email is a good prompt to check!

Where do you deliver?
We deliver across New Zealand. At this stage we don't ship internationally, but we hope to expand in the future.
